#NoHijabDay

Updated: Feb 12, 2025

"If it’s not a choice for all women, then it’s not a choice for any." -female.liberation

I appreciate Yasmine Mohammed’s work on the subject of hijab, Islam, and religious oppression against women and girls.

I learned about #NoHijabDay from Yasmine's content. Her page has helped me to reflect more on the different ways society controls the female body.

I find it interesting how whether you look at societies that cover women up or ones that expose women, all the options are unfunctional clothing that limits women’s mobility, adaptability, and comfort. It’s all anti-freedom and it all sexualizes our physical form. When women and girls do choose function over prescribed form, they’re policed through sex role stereotypes. Can our bodies ever be free from male supremacist violence?

In the artwork by Aman, I love the choice of clothing where the woman is able to freely and comfortably move. She steps over violent men, hair free-flowing, her face free from paint, her arms free to carry her flag and weapon. May the female class be able to move freely one day. It makes me think of @sistaseparatist’s recent post on protest clothing on TikTok. I highly suggest checking it out. I imagine how difficult it would be to protest in hijab and how that is one of the many goals of the feminization of clothing.

✍️ Journal Reflection Prompt:

  • Is there anything you put on your body that isn’t actually comfortable?

  • Over the next year start trying to pay attention to how your body feels in the things you wear.

>Can you move freely?

>Are your clothes adaptable when you’re out and plans change?

>Are you too warm or too cold in your clothes?

>Can you walk for long periods of time in your shoes?

>Can you freely touch any part of your face or is it limited by fabric, makeup, fake

lashes, piercings, etc.?

>Can you enjoy the elements, or do you fear them because how they impact your hair,

face, clothes, etc?
