Feminist Quotes: Gloria Steinem

Karl Marx could have learned a thing or two from Gloria Steinem. I love this quote from a Channel 4 interview with Steinem, along with many other nuggets of wisdom I hope to share soon. I highly suggest watching this short video. It’s almost a decade old and illustrates how little things have changed. It’s vital to listen to our elders in our movement work. Their historical lens helps us to better identify patterns of oppression and actions for independence. You’re an elder to someone, so get out there and share.

  • *The title of this YouTube video is interesting to analyze. Though the piece talks about several issues, most notably reproductive rights, the title doesn’t convey this. It seems to more of a clickbait title.

I wish I could personally know Gloria Steinem so I could ask her honest viewpoints on gender ideology and it’s current iterations. I’m sure an organizer with her level of celebrity would be very careful of her words so as not to alienate any women from the movement. But all I can do is speculate. This is one of the struggles when we squash dissent, we can’t complete meaningful analysis if we don’t trust that individuals are able to speak what they percieve as the truth.
